The New York Mets, Good and Bad

By Tate

This is one of the only one of Tate's posts that will be open to the public

Even though me and Dilan both live near and like the Mariners, I’m a Mets fan because I was born in New York. The Mets are this year's good vibes team, so here are 3 good and 3 bad things about the Mets so far this year.

Good: DJ Stewart

At the time I am writing this, the Mets were thinking about sending DJ Stewart to the minors. I think that is crazy because this guy is one of the Mets’ best hitters. His average isn’t too great according to MLB as of May 2nd with a .208 average, but he also has 14 RBI’s and 4 home runs in 54 at-bats. A highlight of the season, hitting a go-ahead 3-run homer that powered the Mets 4-2 win against the Cubs. This guy was great last year and he’s being great again this year.

Bad: Joey Wendle

The Mets picked up Joey Wendle because he’s not supposed to be great at hitting, but they picked him for his fielding. He’s been bad at both of them. As of May 5, according to ESPN, he’s had 3 errors this year, as for batting, he has a .207 average. His biggest mistake of the year was he blew the Met’s chance of winning on April 30 against Chicago by throwing the ball to 2nd base instead of home on a ground ball with 1 out and the Mets with a lead, the tying run scored, he threw to 2nd for a double play which led to one runner being safe, the other getting out. This led to the Cubs winning 3-1 over the Mets.

Good: Francisco Lindor

Last year, Francisco Lindor wasn’t great at the start of the season, but then he heated up, so I assume he’ll do the same thing this year. His batting average isn’t great, according to ESPN, as of May 6, he’s hitting .207 with 6 home runs and 7 doubles in 135 at-bats. A highlight of the season: hitting a walk-off 2-run double in the Mets come from behind win against the Cubs.

Bad: Adrian Houser

At the start of the season, I had high hopes for this guy. Now I realize that was a bad choice. Currently, he’s 0-3 in wins with an 8.16 ERA. He also only has 16 strikeouts in 28.2 innings pitched. Luckily, the Mets took him out of the starting rotation and threw him in the bullpen for this amazing rookie named Christian Scott, who in his debut had 6 strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched, while also only giving up one earned run. Housers’ biggest loss of the season: giving up 8 runs on 7 hits against the LA Dodgers.

Good: Luis Severino

This guy is probably the Mets’ best pitcher so far in the season. According to MLB, in 40 innings pitched, he has had 37 strikeouts with a 2.93 ERA with only 17 walks. A highlight of the season: on April 29, he brought a no-hitter against the Cubs into the 8th inning, until Dansby

Swanson singled off of him

Bad: Jeff McNeil

In 2022, Jeff McNeil led the MLB in average, won the NL batting title, and was an all-star. This year, he is a different batter. He has a .248 average with only a .644 OPS and only one home run in 125 at-bats. Mistake of the season: he hasn’t made that big of a mistake this season, but he hasn’t been as dominant as I wish he could’ve been. I guess letting a kid’s hopes down is a small mistake, but he kind of let every Met’s fans’ hopes down.

Thank you for reading my blog post on the good and bad players of the Mets. I hope you agree with me on these amazing and struggling players. I have to mention one more extremely dominant player on the Mets. He’s Reed Garrett. This amazing reliever is the strikeout king, with 32 strikeouts in 19 innings pitched. He also has an amazingly small ERA, with an ERA of 0.47. A highlight of the season: I think earlier in the season he was the first Mets pitcher with 17 strikeouts in 8.5 innings pitched. I could be wrong though. Also, for my next blog post, tell me in the comments what you’d rather hear, my opinion if there is such a thing as The Show curse, or my ranking of the Baseball City Connect jerseys so far.
